Rarible is a website for buying and selling NFTs. Recently, Rarible made a big change to its website. They moved the user profiles to a different, older version of the site called og.rarible.com. They did this without sending messages or emails to let me know.
I am very confused and unhappy about this.
What really happened?
Today, I tried to visit Rarible like normal, but something was wrong. All of my NFTs, collections, and history were not showing as expected. Instead, Rarible had moved their profiles and activity to a different website (subdomain, I should say), called og.rarible.com.
I did not hear about this change in advance. Rarible did not send emails or pop-up notifications saying, “We are moving your account.” I had to find out for myself, which felt pretty unfair.
Why am I mad?
This is how I feel:
- “Why did they move my account without asking me?”
- “They are keeping Ethereum and Base on the new version, but throwing away Polygon? What is going on?”
- “They are also removing Base (Multi), that is ERC-1155.”
- “Now, what’s going to happen with my Polygon NFTs?”
- “I had a profile with the username on the previous version. This version only shows wallet addresses? Oh come on!”
- “Now I have to update my links to Rarible manually from my website because links are broken.”
- “No one explained what exactly happened. Maybe they did explain in X, but I don’t use X anymore. Stopping using X for public announcements.”
These are the three biggest problems:
- No good communication: I wanted companies to tell me about big changes before they happen.
- Confusing websites: Now there are two sites, I am not sure where to go.
- Trust is broken: If I don’t know where my stuff is, it’s hard to feel safe. Perhaps it’s time to leave Rarible.
Why did Rarible do this?
Rarible says they wanted to upgrade their system.
The old website (og.rarible.com) is still working, but there wasn’t a good guide or explanation for users on what to do next. And who knows when they will retire og.rarible.com?
What did I learn from this?
web3 is decentralized is a myth. If I use centralized marketplace like Rarible, I still have to remember that they are pretty centralized. (Remember OurSong that disappeared all of a sudden?) Always keep your NFT in your wallet. Be careful putting links to centralized services from my website, because there might come a day when I have to update all of these links manually. (Tedious too)
