At first, I just wanted people to listen.
The “Name Your Price” feature on BandCamp felt perfect. Let listeners decide what to pay—even if it was zero. Every download, every comment, every bit of feedback felt like a win. Occasionally, someone would toss a few bucks my way, and that was more than enough.
Torn between “value” and “compensation”
Over time, giving away beats for free became the norm. My audience grew, but I started questioning my own value as a beatmaker.
“Why is my music free?”
“Other creators put a price on their work—why don’t I?”
These questions wouldn’t leave my mind.
