Conversion

In web terms, conversion refers to the process of turning a website visitor into a customer or taking a desired action. It is the moment when a user completes a predefined goal on your website. The goal might differ based on the purpose of the website, and typical examples include:

  • Making a purchase: The visitor completes a transaction, turning into a paying customer.
  • Filling out a form: Such as subscribing to a newsletter or filling out a contact request form.
  • Clicking a specific button or link: This may indicate interest in a product or service.
  • Downloading content: For example, downloading an ebook, whitepaper, or other assets.
  • Registering for an event: Such as signing up for a webinar or in-person event.

The conversion rate is the percentage of total visitors who complete the desired goal, which is a key metric used to assess the effectiveness of digital marketing campaigns, user experience, and website design. Improving conversion rates is a central focus of conversion rate optimization (CRO).
