Honestly, I feel like YouTube has destroyed the concept of sharing music for the greater good to serve its own interests. In particular, the “culture of distributing royalty-free music” seems to have been ruined by YouTube Content ID. The biggest issue is that music, which is supposed to be free for anyone to use, sometimes gets wrongfully registered to the Content ID system by someone else. This causes unnecessary problems for every user who tries to upload content using that royalty-free music. It’s such a frustrating issue.
Sure, as a creator, you could try to preemptively register your own music to YouTube Content ID before anyone else does, but that comes with its own problems. For example, users who used your music in good faith might suddenly receive automated warnings, which could unnecessarily alarm or confuse them.
I really think YouTube should have put more thought into this aspect of the system.
